Buttonhole Woes

You probably can't see it in this photo (I should have used contrasting thread!), but my button holes are not going according to plan.
My machine apparently does automatic buttonholes, but I can't seem to get it to work properly. I have set it up according to the instructions, but I don't think the fabric is feeding through properly, so it stops feeding but keeps sewing. Subsequently, I have big clumps of thread and no discernible buttonholes. I have tried with different thicknesses of fabric, but it's the same deal.

I'm about to drop Ollie off at a friends for an hour or so, so I might come home and have an uninterrupted session in my own!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My machine is supposed to do auto buttonholes too but it just goes crazy and all the thread breaks...sorry that's not very helpful now is it!

That's the Janome automatic button hole foot isn't it? It sounds like the lever which guides the length of the button hole, isn't quite in place. I have had this happen and not only had a big clump of cotton, but a broken needle! I'll take a photo of my button hole foot set up, annotate it and e-mail it to you.

Hmm, I have a Pfaff (no I'm not swearing) and I had trouble with my auto buttonholer too.
Here are some tips the sewing machine mechanic gave me:
Reduce the width of the buttonhole stitch. Mine is 0.5 on auto, but I make it 0.3.
Use at least two thicknesses of fabric.
And I've found that I almost have to let the machine do it's thing alone. If I touch the machine or try to hold the fabric, it has a hissy fit!
Hope they help!
